Origins of the Basler Läckerli: a spiced biscuit from the Rhine

Created in Basel in the 14th century, Läckerli (or "Leckerli", which literally means "little delicacy") is a rich, dense gingerbread made with honey, almonds, candied citrus peel and spices, delicately glazed after baking. Originally made for monks and noblemen, the Läckerli has become a staple for winter festivities on both banks of the Rhine, particularly in Alsace and German-speaking Switzerland.

Basel may claim to have created it, but Alsace has also made it its own over the centuries. Our Christmas markets, village festivals and pâtisseries have carefully preserved the recipe, making this cross-border classic an indulgent connection between the cultures of the Rhineland.

Our range of Leckerli: traditional, chocolate-coated

Here at Maison Alsacienne de Biscuiterie, we are committed to preserving the recipes that have become emblematic of our region, steeped in its history and the expertise of its artisans. The Leckerli is a perfect example of this, with its rich ingredients, deep flavours and heritage of great Alsace traditions. That's why it was a natural addition to our gingerbread range. Traditional Leckerli

Made with almonds, honey, and candied orange and lemon, the Traditional Leckerli is a small biscuit coated in a sugar glaze made with Kirsch (cherry brandy).

Chocolate-coated Leckerli

As a reminder of its Swiss origins, our pâtissiers are giving you the choice of two chocolate-covered recipes (milk and dark) for the festive season for even more indulgence: discover our Leckerli Assortment!

How do our pâtissiers make Basel Leckerli?

Making Leckerli requires good doses of meticulous technique and indulgence. This little gingerbread requires precise baking, the right balance of spices, and a little patience. Here at the Maison Alsacienne de Biscuiterie, each Leckerli is made with the utmost respect for this tradition: carefully selected ingredients, a dough that pâtissiers take the time to expertly work, a glaze applied while still warm for a natural shine, and cutting by hand, staying true to the artisan spirit.

Why choose Maison Alsacienne de Biscuiterie for your Leckerli?

Because a Leckerli is more than just a biscuit… It's an age-old recipe, a subtle balance of honey, candied fruit, almonds and spices, which deserves to be respected with plenty of love and sensibility. To offer or taste a Leckerli from the Maison Alsacienne de Biscuiterie means choosing authenticity, quality and respect for a decadent heritage.

What to pair with your Leckerli

Dense and subtly spiced, the Leckerli is a biscuit that is best savoured slowly, almost like a hard sweet. Its firm crumb gives way to a melt-in-the-mouth texture thanks to its honey and candied fruit. To bring out the best of our spiced speciality, our Maison recommends that you enjoy it alongside a black tea or a glass of milk, for a comforting and indulgent break.
